Vitamins And Minerals For Healthy Skin

No matter what creams and ointments you apply on your face, if you don’t follow a nutritious diet filled with vitamins and minerals, then you won’t get that elusive fresh youthful glow that shows good health. The key is to take in enough vitamins and use skin care products that contain vitamins as well.

Make sure you get enough Vitamin C and E, since these vitamins help reduce damage that is caused by free radicals, which is a harmful by-product of smoke, sunlight and pollution. The problem with free radicals is that they take away the elastin and collagen in your skin, which are the fibers that support your skin structure.

The lack of elastin and collagen can cause wrinkles and other usual signs of aging. When you use a lotion containing these two vitamins, you will be highly protected against sun damage according to the American Academy of Dermatology. This doesn’t mean though that you should take a lot of vitamins, lather on lotion and then safely bake under the sun. There is an indisputable link between tanning and the increased risk of skin cancer which you cannot ignore.

Vitamin C

In order to have sufficient Vitamin C in your diet, eat citrus fruits such as lemons or oranges, and eat vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, leafy greens and cauliflowers. You can also choose to take vitamin C supplements (maximum of 1000 milligrams per day).

You can also use a topical vitamin C cream in order to encourage the production of collagen in your skin. Find a formulation that contains L-ascorbic acid, which is the only form of vitamin C that can penetrate the skin.

Vitamin E

You can get your vitamin E from nuts, olives, vegetable oils, spinach, seeds and asparagus. Since it may be difficult to meet your daily recommended dose of vitamin E, you can take a supplement instead. If you have rough and dry skin, use lotions or creams containing vitamin E since this can nourish and deeply moisturize your skin.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is important for healthy skin. If you have a dry, flaky complexion, this could be caused by vitamin A deficiency. Carrots and pumpkins are rich in vitamin A, so make sure you incorporate these into your diet. You can also use a topical vitamin A formula to reduce wrinkles, fine lines and acne.

According to studies, if you already take a multivitamin, then you’re probably getting sufficient minerals to keep your skin healthy.

Minerals

One of the important minerals that play an important role in preventing skin cancer is selenium. When used in a cream, it can protect the skin from sun damage. The best sources of selenium include seafood, whole-grain cereals, garlic and eggs.

Another important mineral for healthy skin is copper. Along with vitamin C and zinc, copper helps the development of elastin, which is the fiber that supports your skin structure from underneath. You can use creams that contain copper in order to have firmer, more elastic skin. It also minimizes wrinkling and over-all photo damage.
